Notes on the Words and Music for the Church Year

Sunday Theme
The often diverse subjects of the Sunday readings tends to defy a unified theme. Most attempts are strained. The themes found on these pages was prepared for AAPB and does work to some degree. It is always best to define the theme in line with the sermon, while at the same time linking the whole to the Church Year.

The Sentences
In liturgical worship the sentence follows the opening greeting "The Lord be with you - And also with you" and serves to set the theme of the service. For the most part the sentences come from the Revised Standard Version or the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible copyright by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Church of Christ in the USA. Use in worship is allowed without seeking copyright release.

The Collects
In Anglican liturgy the collect of the day serves as a special prayer related to the sunday of the church year.
BCP - The Book of Common Prayer 1662 collects, revised for AAPB. No copyright applies. Due to the thematic changes brought about by moving from a one year series to a three years series of readings, the placement of the BCP collect may not always be on its originally intended day. For a conservative revision see "In Living Use" prepared by the Liturgical Commission of the Anglican Church in Australia.
AAPB - An Australian Prayer Book, 1978. Copyright The Anglican Church of Australia Trust Corporation. This prayer book is generally no longer in use. The collects produced for this Prayer Book aim to be simple and to the point. They begin with a bidding, following which there is silence. After reflection the prayer is read.
APBA - A Prayer Book for Australia 1995. Copyright The Anglican Church of Australia Trust Corporation. The purchase of a single copy of the minister's edition by a church fulfills all copyright obligations where the use of these prayers in worship is more than just occasional. The primary sources of these collects is "All Desires Known", Janet Morley SPCK 1992, and "The Book of Common Worship", Westminster/John knox Press, 1993. Source should be acknowledged when printed.

The Readings
The readings on this site generally follow those set by the Revised Common Lectionary, but are adjusted at times to better suit an expository sermon. Where the reading does not follow the RCL reading, the actual RCL reading is in GREEN. The RCL is copyright by the Consultation on Common Texts 1992. No permission is required for using this lectionary, a lectionary used by the main Christian denominations throughout the world. The Supplementary Readings are suitable for alternate readings or a second service where members have already attended the main Sunday service. These readings generally follow those provided by APBA, but are adjusted at times to better suit an expository sermon. Where the reading does not follow the APBA reading, the actual APBA reading is in RED.

Hymns and Choruses to suit the RCL Sunday readings (A work in progress)
The suggested Hymns and Spiritual songs* found on this site are designed to support a devotional form of worship, either liturgical or unstructured, for a small local congregation or house church community. The suggested music begins with "Gathering Songs" which particularly suit a small community where children are present. These are followed by the more formal "hymn sandwich" selection. The selection is made by Marilyn Moir, music leader for The Dandelion House Church. The main hymn source is Together in Song, the new Australian hymn book published in 1999 by Harper Collns. Most of the hymns in this book are common to other traditional hymnals. The main chorus source is Come Celebrate, folk-style songs produced by the Community of Celebration. The music selection also includes other choruses and hymns, new and old, from a range of sources, many out of print. and is offered for those who love the search.
